On December 14, 2004 Agence France-Presse reported, "A Buddhist teacher was shot dead in southern Thailand, the latest victim in a separatist-inspired insurgency that has raged in the Muslim-dominated region this year, police said.
Pinyo Wongruekvech, 42, was shot three times by motorcycle gunmen who followed him and his wife as they rode a motorcycle to work in southern Narathiwat province... Teachers in the state schools of the predominantly Buddhist kingdom, along with security forces and government officials, have been among the main targets in a campaign of violence that has left more than 550 people dead this year."
