On August 4, 2002 The Seattle Times reported that 4 Tibetan monks in Redmond, Washington, created "a sand mandala, a religious and artistic expression symbolizing harmony between the environment and living beings... The piece illustrates core principles of Buddhism, said the group's translator...  The monks are touring cities in the United States and Canada to raise money for their Gaden Jangtse monastery in south India...  Part of the monks' mission is to educate people about Tibet's political situation. Many Tibetan Buddhists have fled Chinese control to other Asian countries, including neighboring India. Dhargye said he hopes the tour will increase awareness."
