On April 15, 2004 The San Mateo Times reported, "The bridge of friendship between Burlingame and the Shinnyo-En USA Burlingame community strengthened Wednesday with an $8,000 grant made to the Burlingame School District. With the Shinnyo-En Foundation, city officials and a number of students celebrated the 16th Annual Bridge of Friendship at Franklin School. This year's theme is, 'To Contribute to Society with Loving Kindness.' The Shinnyo-En order, connected to the oldest type of Buddhism, has donated money and performed other charitable acts in the community for years, said Nichelle Blanco, a temple staff member."
