On February 8, 2006 the Daily Record reported, "A standing room crowd is expected tonight when the Jam e Masjid Islamic Center goes before the planning board seeking approval of its plan to expand and renovate its Harrison Street building. Although no testimony has yet been presented to the board, the application already has generated controversy in the neighborhood. A group calling itself Concerned Citizens of Boonton has formed, and some of its members sent out several fliers to residents informing them about the proposal and the meeting dates... The center, which serves as a prayer facility, day care and school, hopes to expand because the 100-year-old structure cannot accommodate the 350 or so families that attend services and lessons, according to mosque officials... Neighbors are... concerned that the size of the building, along with the dome and the minaret, will be out of character with the existing neighborhood... The project generated a lot of media attention last month when someone nailed a large American flag over the doorway of the center."
