On October 18, 2004 The Guardian reported, "Britain's ancient laws of blasphemy and blasphemous libel are likely to be repealed under proposals being considered by the home secretary, David Blunkett. The move is being considered as part of a package that will include a new offence of incitement to religious hatred, in order to make clear that freedom of speech and the freedom to criticise religions will not be curtailed. Home Office officials disclosed that Mr Blunkett was considering the abolition of the blasphemy law at a recent meeting with the National Secular Society, in answer to their concerns about the creation of the new incitement law."
