On August 6, 2002, The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Sukhpal Singh Sodhi was "shot to death while driving a cab in San Francisco... Police say they aren't sure what happened, but they don't think someone was trying to kill him... Sukhpal was one of 50 members of an extended family who had left India in recent years, finding refuge in the United States and sending [money] back... to make life better in their village in Punjab state." Last year, Sukhpal's brother Balbir Singh Sodhi, "was shot to death in Mesa, Ariz., four days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks,... in a hate crime because of his beard and turban."
