On August 6, 2002, The Arizona Republic featured an interview with Harjit Singh Sodhi, the cousin of the two Sikh brothers both murdered within the last year. Balbir Singh Sodhi, an Arizona gas station owner, "was gunned down in hate four days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks." Now his younger brother, Sukhpal, has been "hit by a stray bullet, possibly from a gang fight, as he drove his taxi on Sunday in San Francisco... Police Lt. Judie Pursell said... 'There's nothing to indicate to us that it was a hate crime.'"
