On April 16, 2003 The Arizona Republic reported that "federal authorities and Valley community leaders staged a pre-emptive strike against hate crimes Tuesday in a news conference dedicated to peace and tolerance. The convocation, organized by U.S. Attorney Paul Charlton, included leaders from the Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Sikh, Black, Hispanic, Indian and gay communities."
