On August 2, 2006 the Associated Press reported, "A bomb planted along a railroad in southern Thailand exploded early Wednesday and killed three policemen, a day after suspected Muslim separatists carried out at least 100 attacks, police said.

Another bomb exploded Wednesday afternoon at a school construction site in Pattani town, killing an army officer, police said.

More than 1,500 people have been killed in Thailand's three Muslim-dominated provinces - Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat - since a resurgence of a violent Islamic separatist movement in January 2004.

The railroad blast in Songkhla province's Chana district, adjacent to Pattani province, targeted police who inspect the tracks in the morning, said police Lt. Col. Sompien Eksomya. One officer was injured. Train traffic was halted on part of a route from Bangkok to Sungai Kolok, a town near the Malaysia border, the national rail authority said. Repairs were expected to take at least one day."
