On February 20, 2004 The Mercury News reported, "San Jose fire officials are looking into whether Wednesday's fire at a Buddhist temple -- already deemed arson -- was also a hate crime.

Investigators brought in specially trained dogs to examine the scene at Pao-Hua Buddhist Temple on McKee Road, and found evidence that a flammable liquid was used to set fire to an altar surrounding a Buddha statue, said fire Capt. Allison Cabral. No one was injured in the 2:26 p.m. fire, but there was an estimated $5,000 worth of damage.

'With the destruction of a holy place, common sense would say you have to ask the question, what motivated this?' Cabral said. San Jose police have also joined in the investigation to determine whether a hate crime occurred."
