A place to gather with family and friends for meals and community.

A holy site for prayer.

A mosque to call the House of God.

For more than four years, a few dozen local Muslims have gathered in a tiny office space for weekly prayers and gatherings. Several others of the faith have chosen to drive as far as from Lake Ozark to Columbia for Friday prayers and other community events at the mosque there.

But Saturday, the pursuit of a permanent location for the Jefferson City Muslim community drew a step closer with a ground-breaking off Monticello Road for a 4,800-square-foot mosque on a five-acre plot.

“Our community is growing,” said president Iqbal Hussain. “We have limited space, even the women do not have the privacy.”
