In a world fraught with anger and conflict and violence, there were thoughts of peace on the first day of this new year.
Greater Lansing residents gathered to hope for a better future, offering prayers at places such as the Bharatiya Temple of Lansing in Haslett and at Cristo Rey Church in Lansing.
Herbs for healing and clarified butter for purity were poured onto a sacred fire at the Hindu temple as worshipers chanted.
"Peace pervades everywhere," they said. "May that peace come to me."
The air was heavy with the sweet smell of incense and the calming voices of more than 30 people young and old.
