On February 9, 2004 The Straits Times ran an Agence France Presse article that reported, "Perth's ethnic communities say worsening racial violence in which three Chinese restaurants were firebombed last week has led to fearful parents in Asia stopping their children from travelling to the city...Mr [Suresh] Rajan, [chairman of the Ethnic Communities Council of Western Australia] said churches, mosques and Asian businesses were vandalised frequently and racist graffiti sprayed on walls...'We've seen three attacks on a Sikh temple, vandal attacks...someone threw a pig's head and smashed bottles of beer on the front of the temple, confusing them for Muslims,' he said. Muslims have been targetted since the Sept 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. A Vietnamese community hall and a Chinese-Christian centre have also been vandalised."
