On September 1, 2005 the American Jewish Committee reported, "The American Jewish Committee, a pioneer in interfaith and intergroup relations, has opened a fund to aid the survivors of Hurricane Katrina by providing emergency assistance as well as monies for reconstruction... 'AJC’s Hurricane Katrina Fund is a statement about our deep and abiding concern for fellow human beings and the importance of faith and interreligious relations in the life of our country,' said AJC Executive Director David A. Harris... Contributions to the AJC Hurricane Katrina Fund will be used first to help agencies on the ground providing urgent necessary services. The AJC funds also will be allocated for long-term projects repairing and rebuilding churches, synagogues and other houses of worship damaged in this violent storm."
