The Gibraltar Interfaith Group, formed three years ago, is the latest beneficiary of the regular donations made by the Alwani Trust to deserving local causes and individuals. Kishin Alwani presented a cheque for £500 to Reverend Stewart Lamont, Minister of St Andrew’s Church, (Church of Scotland) in the presence of the Interfaith Group’s Secretary Levi Attias and Treasurer Deepa Aidasani.

The money will be used to produce a multi-faith 2008 calendar, printed locally, which will feature sacred worship places in Gibraltar and sacred dates of the different religions represented on the Rock. Reverend Lamont said that several beautiful images have already been identified for the calendar, which will be on sale for £3. Any profit will be donated to a charity chosen by the group, which already has Christian, Hindu, Jewish and Muslim members as well as people from other faiths.

The aim of the group is to enable members of different faiths to learn about each other’s beliefs, practices and traditions in order to create greater friendship, harmony and understanding.

As Levi Attias said at the cheque presentation, “In Gibraltar the various faiths get on very well together, but at the same time we know very little about each other’s beliefs and practices.”
