Snatam Kaur knew early on she wasn’t like the other kids.

How many of them, for example, were named by a family friend who happened to be a kundalini yoga master?

Kaur was born in Trinidad, Colo., in 1972 and immersed in the Sikh faith.

Her father, a manager for the Grateful Dead, and her mother began studying with Yogi Bhajan. It was Bhajan who gave her the name Snatam (pronounced Sun-Autumn), which means “universal nucleus and friend to all.”

The singer said she has dedicated her life to living up to the name, and part of that dedication will be her sacred-chant performances in Hampton Roads this weekend.

“When someone speaks my name, it binds me to the universal and reminds me to be accepting and reach out to people of all faiths,” she said by telephone from her home in New Mexico.
