The Sikh community in Abbotsford is responding in force to help victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Surdev Singh Jatana, secretary-treasurer of the temple on Blueridge Drive, said members of the Gurdwara Sahib Kalgidhar Darbar have pledged thousands of dollars to a region-wide effort by the Sikh community.

“We have collected around $40,000 in pledges locally to send to the campaign,”said Jatana.

The funds collected will be contributed to an effort spearheaded by the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara on Scott Road in Surrey.

The Surrey Gurdwara reported raising $100,000 the first day of donations last Thursday.
