Tonight, as 45,000 Jews in the Houston area dip apples into honey and pray for a sweet new year, those hardest hit by the recession and Hurricane Ike can look forward to a little extra sugar.
Just in time for the celebration of Rosh Hashana or the Jewish New Year, two local groups have announced the creation of a $500,000, economic assistance fund to help local Jews in need.
“Maybe this is a bit of honey,” says Lee Wunsch, president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston. “In years past, we've raised a great deal of money for non-Jewish groups. But this time, in this crisis, we need to take care of each other. The mission of the federation is that no Jew in need stands alone.”
