Research conducted by affiliates at Kent State University led by Dr. David W. Odell-Scott and Dr. Surinder M. Bhardwaj in 1999.

Activities and Schedule

The center holds Soto Zen Meditation and discussion groups. Weekly Meditation (Zazen) is held most Sundays from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M in Room 308 of the Kent State Student Center. Sometimes the members visit the Cleveland Buddhist Temple for special activities. Check the website for a current schedule of events.

History

The original worship site was at 125 University Drive, Kent, Ohio and was founded by Tim McCarthy after he finished his training in California. One of the major challenge the group faces, is keeping membership focused on Zazen minded actions and attracting persons interested in ethical standards and intellectual endeavors. Zazen was previously held in the house at 715 Franklin Ave., Kent, Ohio. A main feature of the Kent Zendo (to the dismay of some) was a constant influx of animals being fostered by Tim McCarthy who was a humane officer for the county.

Demographics

Members are predominantly drawn from the Kent State University student community.

Description

In the long term, the center's members hope to find a permanent home in which to practice Zazen. For the foreseeable future, the Kent Zendo will hold regular meetings on the Kent State campus, supplemented by periodic retreats of extended Zazen at various locations in Ohio.
