MJL Iftar / Malcolm X SpeakOut

Date:

Sunday, May 20, 2018 (All day)

Please join us for an iftar and speak-out the day after Malcolm X Day! We invite you to share your experiences and stories of resistance in order to build a stronger community. All -- Muslim and non, fasting or not -- are welcome. To honor the legacies of activist ancestors -- especially Malcolm X -- who spoke out against injustice, we invite those who have experienced abusive policing, surveillance, or profiling as national security threats to share your story in a way that feels comfortable to you. In addition to food and a warm community, we'll have art supplies and an open mic! Join us in reflecting on two themes from Ramadan that are relevant to social justice struggles. One: the strength that is gained in abstaining from that which you depend on. In fighting for justice, we often must abstain from unjust systems, and fasting is one way to exercise that muscle. The second: the value of community. For many, special bonds are formed when we gather in times of struggle -- whether through breaking a fast together or affirming one another's dignity and power to end systems of oppression. There is no cost to attend, but space is limited. Please RSVP at bit.ly/MJLiftar2018 to ensure an accurate headcount for food. If you are not directly impacted by criminalization, please considering donating to support MJL's work for justice for marginalized communities.www.muslimjusticeleague.org/donate Please reach out if you have any questions. We hope to see you there!
