History

Ash-Shaheed Islamic Center has been associated with WD Muhammad since 1975. The community began in 1989 in community members' homes. As the community grew, they began to worship in a gym. In 1990, they moved to their present location. As the community continues to expand, they have begun to recognize the need for an even larger building. They have submitted plans for their property on Sugar Creek Road, and by the end of the year they hope to have their new masjid completed.

Description

The center consists of the Sister Clara Muhammad School, which meets on the weekends like a Sunday school, and the main worship center. The main worship area consists of two open rooms including a kitchen. The rooms are mostly bare with chairs in the back for the women and a podium for the imam. Though women and men sit separately, there is no divider between them.

Affiliation with Other Communities/Organizations

This community is active working with shelters for homeless women and children, especially serving food. They also reach out to shut-ins and the ill through visitation, gifts, meals, and medication. In addition, they host health workshops including a community health fair. Ash-Shaheed is very involved in diversity initiatives; they visit churches weekly to engage in interfaith dialogue.
