Events

HILT hosts a number of large and small events throughout the year geared toward building connections among, and strengthening the resources of, the Harvard community. Recurring events include the HILT Annual Conference, the HILT Speaker Series, and Faculty Colleague Conversations.

HILT has previously organized university-wide events in teaching and learning, including:

  • 2015 Learning Spaces Week convened June 8 – 11, 2015 with over 200 Harvard affiliates participating in demonstrations and open houses of 23 campus learning spaces around Harvard University in Cambridge, Allston, and the Longwood Medical Campus.
  • #HackTheEDU, a 2014 hack-a-thon open to all Harvard students, providing mentoring and tools to develop learning and teaching tools.
  • Special Topics Seminar: Innovating Assessment in the University Classroom, a 2014 Wintersession seminar taught by members of the former HILT Research Team (now VPAL Research), explored foundational research from the social and learning sciences that informs university-level learning assessment. 
  • Psychology 2550: The Psychology of Learning and Teaching, a 2014 spring seminar co-taught by HILT Director Erin Driver-Linn and former team member Samuel Moulton, explored varied phenomena of higher education - MOOCs, flipped classrooms, grading, procrastination, etc. - as proving ground to understand and evaluate major ideas and evidence from psychology. 
  • 2013 January Academy, a boot camp for doctoral students from across the university, co-sponsored with HarvardX, to develop technology-enabled teaching innovations for use in a classroom setting.

In addition, HILT has lent support to the following university-wide events:

  • Transgressing the Limits of Knowledge, a 2015 multidisciplinary panel discussion focused on teaching and learning organized by Bok Center graduate students. 
  • Sensing the Data, a 2015 Wintersession series of luncheon events focused on digital authorship organized by the FAS Expanding the Boundaries of Authorship group and co-sponsored by the Harvard Library and the Academic Technology Group. 
  • Multimedia Exposed, a 2014 Wintersession series of keynote events and hands-on workshops related to authoring with multimedia tool organized by the FAS Expanding the Boundaries of Authorship group, the Multimedia Lab In Lamont Library, the FAS Academic Technology Group, and Harvard College Library.
  • ComSciCon, a 2014 Wintersession workshop series organized by STEM graduate students focused on science and communication skills.
