CECILIA COLOMBI: THE DEVELOPMENT OF ACADEMIC PROFICIENCY IN ORAL SPANISH IN THE UNITED STATES: A FUNCTIONAL APPROACH

Cecilia Colombi is Professor and Chair Department of Spanish and Portuguese University of California, Davis

This presentation, sponsored by the seminar Teaching Spanish as Heritag Language: Theory and Practice (Harvard Department of Romance Languages and Literatures) will focus on an ongoing study that seeks to identify the linguistic features of the oral academic proficiency in advanced L2 Spanish students, and the effect of explicit instruction in advancing such Spanish oral academic skills. Students from the university in northern California were enrolled in a course of Hispanic sociolinguistics in the US that aimed to improve oral proficiency in Spanish through formal presentations along with an explicit and practical teaching of the linguistic features of spoken academic Spanish.

MARIA CARREIRA: STORIES OF LINGUISTIC AND CULTURAL RESILIENCE

Maria Carreira is professor of Spanish at California State University, Long Beach and co-director of the National Heritage Language Resource Center at UCLA.

Roughly one out of every five children (22%) in American schools speaks a language other than English at home. This number is significantly higher in some of this nation’s largest urban areas, including Chicago (41%), Los Angeles (65%), Houston (55%), and New York (49%). The future of America is inextricably bound to that of language minority children. To secure this future, America must come to know these children and harness their potential. In this presentation, Maria Carreira will summarize her research on the everyday experiences of Latino children. Drawing on their personal narratives, she will discuss the critical role that resilience -- the capacity to tap into personal, cultural, and social resources - plays in the overall wellbeing and academic development of this population, as well on the maintenance and development of their home language. On the basis of this information, she will argue that heritage language education should prioritize the teaching of cultural and linguistic resilience.

KIM POTOWSKI: TEACHING SPANISH AS A HERITAGE LANGUAGE

Kim Potowski is Professor of Spanish linguistics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. More details about her work can be found at http://potowski.org

As of 2010, Latinos formed 17% of the U.S. population and are the demographic group that is increasing at the largest rate. Those individuals who grow up speaking some Spanish at home are often referred to as ‘heritage speakers’ of the language. Current estimates suggest that 40% of universities now offer courses in Spanish that are specially designed for heritage speakers. In this talk, Kim Potowski discusses what makes teaching Spanish to heritage speakers different from teaching it to second language learners, as well as some salient pedagogical and administrative issues involved when teaching this population.

GUADALUPE VALDÉS: THINKING ABOUT WHAT WE TEACH AND WHY

Guadalupe Valdés is Bonnie Katz Tenenbaum Professor of Education at Stanford University

When language is taught in classroom settings, it is “curricularized” (Valdés, 2015; Kibler & Valdés, 2016). The “curricularization” of language is part of a complex interacting system that includes: conceptualizations of language, theories of acquisition/development, language policies, traditions of instruction, ideologies of language, teaching materials, and end-of-course assessments. This presentation will invite teachers to examine the mechanisms (e.g., policies, sequence of instruction, text materials, student categorizations) that are part of their own practice and to consider how they may be influenced by ideologies of language, expected outcomes, traditional methods and approaches, and departmental goals and expectations that are deeply engrained in the language-teaching profession itself.

MARTHA FAIRCLOUGH: TEACHING OF SPANISH AS A HERITAGE LANGUAGE

Marta Fairclough is Professor of Spanish linguistics and director of heritage language education in the Department of Hispanic Studies at the University of Houston.

The purpose of this workshop is to offer an overview of current pedagogical practices in the teaching of Spanish as a heritage language in the United States, including some innovative ideas in the field. After a brief introduction to the sociodemographic and linguistic contexts of Spanish in the United States, including some of the main characteristics of heritage language learners (which differentiate them from second language learners of Spanish), we will look at existing pedagogical approaches.

MARIA LUISA PARRA:  LA RECETA DE MI ABUELITA AND BEYOND: TEACHING LATINO CULTURES TO SPANISH HERITAGE SPEAKERS

María Luisa Parra is Spanish Senior Preceptor at the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. She directs the initiative and seminar of Teaching Spanish as heritage language: Theory and Practice at the same University.

One of the main elements that Spanish heritage students bring into the classroom is their cultural background. Their daily life exposure during childhood to food, religion, music and to the Spanish language provides them with an advantage over FLL in relation to "knowing" the Latino cultures. Why then include "culture" in our classes for heritage students? What else could we "teach" them? And what else could they learn? In this workshop, we will answer these questions by problematizing notions of such as "culture" with big "C" and little "c." We will explore the relevance of teaching cultural heritage in depth through principles of critical pedagogy to incorporate the historical, social and linguistic dimensions that have shaped the Latino cultures.

JULIO TORRES: TASKS IN ACTION: EXPLORING TASK-BASED INSTRUCTION  WITH HERITAGE LEARNERS

Julio Torres is Assistant Professor of Spanish at the University of California, Irvine.

The first part of this presentation will begin by making a case of why task-based language teaching (TBLT) ought to be considered a viable teaching approach for heritage language (HL) learners. The rationale for TBLT will be discussed in conjunction with a brief summary of current findings on the effects of task-based instruction on HL learners’ perceptions as well as their language performance and development, which can provide a window into how HL learners approach instruction. Specifically, findings will address the following areas: conducting a needs analysis, examining learner motivation, peer collaboration and computer-assisted language learning. The second part of the presentation will focus on the design of task-based lessons, which include the criteria for creating a task as well as pre-task and post-task cycles to support and exploit the use of the task for instructional purposes. Examples will be provided to illustrate these three phases of task-based instruction.

MANEL LACORTE: PLANIFICACIÓN DIDÁCTICA EN LA ENSEÑANZA DEL ESPAÑOL COMO LENGUA DE HERENCIA

Manel Lacorte is Associate Professor at the University of Maryland.

Unit and lesson planning is the way in which we organize teaching and learning around a central concept and through a coherent, varied, and balanced process. Drawing upon socioconstructivist theoretical principles, this hands-on workshop will outline the essential characteristics of unit/lesson planning applied to the teaching of Spanish as a heritage language in different contexts and at different levels.

REYES LLOPIS: MIND IN BODY AND SPACE: WHAT COGNITIVE LINGUISTICS MAY BRING TO HERITAGE LANGUAGE TEACHING

Reyes Llopis is Senior Lecturer at the Department of Latin American and Iberian Cultures

Because the mind of the heritage language learner is closer to a native speaker than that of the foreign learner, the field of Cognitive Linguistics provides an interesting theoretical framework for the teaching of both grammar and vocabulary in Spanish for academic purposes. Within this framework, language is understood as a builder of meaning that stems from interaction with the world and draws from the sensorimotor experience of all speakers. This point of view affords remarkable potential in language teaching from a heritage perspective. In this workshop we will explore what Cognitive Linguistics is and how it can impact the teaching of Spanish in formal settings through the grammar of space, the linguistic system that lives in the mind, and how our embodied language can be learned and understood. Methodological approaches to cognitive language instruction will be discussed and applied through examples and discussion.

FLORENCIA HENSHAW: TECHNOLOGY-ENHANCED HERITAGE LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION

Florencia Henshaw is Director of Advanced Spanish program at the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Considering that one of the main advantages of computer-assisted language learning is that it allows for more individualized instruction and personalized learning, the use of technology should be at the core of every heritage language (HL) program. However, the use of technology in HL teaching has remained largely unexplored. In this workshop, we will first discuss some general parameters and best practices for technology integration. We will then explore a variety of Web 2.0 tools, as well as concrete ideas for activities and projects that aim to enhance HL learning through meaningful and authentic synchronous and asynchronous communication. Lastly, participants will have the opportunity to select one of the tools described in the workshop and create a project relevant to their own courses.
