In the Old College building, students ate supper. It was a lighter meal than dinner, sometimes prepared with dinner leftovers. After supper students would often remain in the Commons for conversation, and those who had approval from a parent and a physician were permitted to smoke. They were not expected to study in the dim evenings. Underclassmen were required to return to their rooms and extinguish their lamps at 9:00, while upperclassmen were permitted to stay up until 11:00.
