Students endured rigorous schooling before admission to Harvard; they were expected to be fluent in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. During college lectures, tutors would often read a text in Latin (except for Greek and Hebrew lectures) while students took notes on subjects like logic, rhetoric, ethics, and metaphysics.
Tutors lectured in the Old College building, where students spent the majority of their day. Morning prayers, lectures, dinner, recreation, evening prayers, and supper were all held in this large space.
