Excavation Time Lapse

Excavation time lapse video

Stratigraphy

In this video of the fall 2014 excavation, the site is marked with string to form a grid. Then student archaeologists dig inside their chosen grid units and sift the soil for artifacts.

Why do archaeologists dig so carefully, laying out a grid and excavating with hand tools? Like a layer cake, stratified layers in the soil represent chronological layers of the past. Archaeologists remove the layers one by one, while noting the position of each artifact within its layer. The position may be the best clue to an artifact's date.
