Goat perturbation recovery

Understanding the principles underlying stability in both terrestrial and aerial locomotion increases our understanding of animal movement and can inspire engineers designing robots. These experiments were part of a collaboration with Boston Dynamics. In order to perturb goats in a quantifiable way we designed a rotating force platform that, in combination with four other force platforms, registered the forces produced by goats during perturbations and subsequent recoveries. An auto-tracking camera system in combination with markers on the animal's body lead to estimates of body movements. Combined, the body movement and force data allowed for analysis of the mechanics involved in walking, running, and stabilization.
